A Gentle, Non-Surgical Approach to Knee Pain

If knee pain is making it difficult to walk, climb stairs, exercise, golf, work, or simply enjoy everyday activities, knee decompression therapy in Jackson MI may provide another option.

At Manchester Family Chiropractic Center, we use the Knee On Trac® system by Ergo-Flex Technologies, an automated knee traction system designed to gently reduce pressure within the knee joint.

What Is Knee Decompression?

Think about your knee like a hinge with cushioning between the bones.

Over time, arthritis, previous injuries, repetitive stress, inflammation, or normal wear and tear can make the knee painful and stiff. When the joint is irritated or the space within the knee becomes narrowed, everyday activities such as walking, standing, stairs, squatting, or getting out of a chair can become uncomfortable.

Knee decompression works by gently pulling the knee joint apart.

While you sit comfortably, the Knee On Trac system applies a controlled amount of traction to the knee. This temporarily reduces compression within the joint and gives the structures surrounding the knee a chance to move with less pressure.

A simple way to picture it is:

Instead of pushing two irritated joint surfaces together, knee decompression gently creates space between them.

How Does Knee On Trac Work?

During treatment, you remain comfortably seated while your knee is positioned in the Knee On Trac system.

The machine then applies a gentle, controlled pulling force to the knee. Depending on your individual treatment plan, traction can be applied steadily or intermittently.

This gentle traction is designed to:

  • Temporarily reduce pressure and compression within the knee joint
  • Improve joint mobility and range of motion
  • Reduce stiffness and help the knee move more comfortably
  • Decrease stress on irritated joint structures
  • Encourage normal movement of joint fluid within the knee
  • Make walking and everyday movement more comfortable for appropriate patients

Treatment is non-invasive and does not involve needles, injections, or surgery.

Why Can Creating Space Help?

Your knee is designed to move.

Inside the joint is synovial fluid, a natural lubricating fluid that helps the surfaces of the knee move smoothly.

When a painful or arthritic knee is constantly being compressed, movement can become uncomfortable and the surrounding muscles may tighten or guard the joint.

Gentle traction temporarily unloads the knee. For some patients, reducing that mechanical pressure can make movement easier and provide relief from pain and stiffness.

Think of it as giving an irritated knee a little breathing room.

What Types of Knee Problems May Benefit?

After an examination, we may consider knee decompression as part of a treatment program for people experiencing:

  • Osteoarthritis and degenerative changes
  • Joint-space narrowing
  • Chronic knee pain
  • Knee stiffness or decreased mobility
  • Pain with walking or standing
  • Difficulty climbing or descending stairs
  • Pain associated with previous knee injuries
  • Meniscus-related symptoms when clinically appropriate
  • General wear-and-tear of the knee
  • Persistent knee discomfort that has not responded adequately to other conservative approaches

Not every type of knee pain should be treated with traction. We evaluate the knee first to determine whether Knee On Trac is appropriate for your condition.
